You’ve been practicing yoga for a while. You know the names, you follow the sequences—but sometimes, the poses don’t feel quite right. Maybe there’s discomfort in your knee during Warrior I, or your shoulders always ache after Downward Dog. You’re not alone. Even seasoned practitioners often miss subtle cues that make a world of difference.
That’s where alignment refinement comes in. And it’s at the heart of our Asana & Beyond sessions at Pratimoksha in Dubai.
Let’s walk through how to fine-tune some foundational poses—step by step—so you can protect your joints, activate the right muscles, and deepen your practice safely.
Why Alignment Matters
Proper alignment isn’t about looking perfect—it’s about moving with intelligence. When your body is aligned:
- Muscles engage in balance
- Joints are protected
- Breath flows more freely
- You prevent injury and build strength
This is especially crucial in Dubai’s high-energy environment, where many carry postural imbalances from long hours at desks or behind the wheel.
Pose 1: Tadasana (Mountain Pose)
What it looks like: Standing tall, feet together or hip-width apart
Refinements:
- Spread your toes and ground through all four corners of your feet
- Gently lift your kneecaps to engage the thighs
- Lengthen your spine without locking your knees
- Roll shoulders back and down, palms face forward
- Crown of the head lifts; chin is slightly tucked
Why it matters: Tadasana is the blueprint for all standing poses. Nail this, and everything else improves.
Pose 2: Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward Dog)
What it looks like: An inverted V-shape
Refinements:
- Hands shoulder-width apart, fingers spread wide
- Press into the base of each finger to protect wrists
- Ears align with upper arms; relax your neck
- Slight bend in the knees if hamstrings are tight
- Lift hips high; lengthen spine
Why it matters: Common errors here strain the shoulders or lower back. With proper alignment, this pose becomes a restorative refuge.
Pose 3: Virabhadrasana I (Warrior I)
What it looks like: Front knee bent, arms overhead
Refinements:
- Front knee stacks directly over ankle
- Back foot turns out slightly (~45 degrees)
- Hips square to the front
- Draw lower ribs in to avoid flaring the chest
- Press into the outer edge of the back foot for grounding
Why it matters: Misalignment here often causes knee or low back pain. Squaring the hips and stabilizing the back leg brings strength and ease.
Pose 4: Trikonasana (Triangle Pose)
What it looks like: A wide-legged side stretch with one hand on the shin or floor
Refinements:
- Feet grounded and legs straight (not locked)
- Front heel aligns with back arch
- Extend arms in one line from fingertip to fingertip
- Avoid collapsing into the bottom hand
- Engage the core to lift up, not sink down
Why it matters: This pose often gets over-reached. Lifting from the core and extending evenly avoids strain.
Pose 5: Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose)
What it looks like: Chest lifted, hands under shoulders
Refinements:
- Elbows stay close to your ribs
- Shoulders slide down, away from ears
- Press lightly into palms; don’t push too hard
- Engage glutes gently; legs remain on the floor
- Lift through the chest, not the chin
Why it matters: Done wrong, this pose can compress the lower back. Done right, it opens the heart and strengthens the spine.
Tips for Practicing Alignment Daily
- Use mirrors or record yourself to observe posture
- Go slow—hold poses longer to explore adjustments
- Ask your teacher for personalized feedback
- Incorporate props like blocks or straps for support
- Breathe consciously and adjust as needed
