Diwali is built around a single image: a small flame holding steady against the dark. Classical yoga has a practice built around the same image.
Trataka, or candle gazing, is one of the six cleansing practices described in the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, the fifteenth-century text that still anchors classical hatha yoga. The instruction is plain. Rest the gaze on a small, steady point, usually a flame, and hold it there. The eyes settle first, and the mind tends to follow.
As homes across Dubai fill with lamps ahead of Diwali on 8 November, we’re bringing the festival and the yoga practice together. Join us at our Oud Metha yoga studio on Wednesday 4 November, from 7:00 to 8:00 pm.

The Diwali yoga evening
- A short, gentle yoga practice to release the working day from the body
- Breathing to slow everything down
- A guided trataka meditation by candlelight
- Time to sit together, share the festival and greet friends
No yoga experience is needed. Sit on a chair or on the floor, whichever is comfortable. Anyone with an eye condition can follow the breathing and meditation with eyes closed.
A gathering for our yoga community
It has been a while since our community gathered in one room, and this evening is mainly for our yoga students, the people who have practiced with us over the years. Friends and family are welcome too. Diwali in Dubai belongs to everyone who celebrates it, and to many who simply enjoy the light.
The evening follows the classical approach that Lalitha Viswanath has taught in Dubai for more than 20 years: simple yoga practices, done with full attention. For anyone the candlelit meditation stays with, our meditation workshop takes the same practice further.
